One of the first things I did early in my relationship with my husband was to wash his feet—literally. It was a deeply symbolic act, rooted in the example Jesus gave us in John 13. Jesus, knowing full well that Judas was going to betray Him, knelt down and washed his feet.
Let that sink in for a moment: Jesus humbled Himself, performing a servant’s task for the very man who would hand Him over to be crucified. If Jesus could wash the feet of Judas, don’t you think He would also wash the feet of Harris, Biden, or Trump?
We live in a time of immense division, where arguments often lead to entrenched positions rather than understanding. But as followers of Christ, we’re called to live differently. Stop arguing with those who refuse to seek understanding. Instead, honor the Lord by living out His teachings.
Don’t Worship the Flesh
One of the most dangerous traps we can fall into as Christians is idolizing earthly leaders. Whether it’s a political figure, a celebrity, or even a pastor, we must remember: that no human leader can take the place of Christ.
The Bible reminds us of what happens when people clamor for fleshly leaders. In 1 Samuel 8, the Israelites demanded a king to lead them, rejecting God as their ultimate authority. So, God gave them Saul—a king after their own desires, not His.
We must be careful not to reject the true King of Kings by placing our trust in flawed, human leaders. Instead, let us chase after God with our whole hearts, seeking His will above all else.
Be a Servant, Offer Hope
Jesus calls us to a life of service, compassion, and love. Look around at the world today—people are grieving, struggling, and feeling lost. What an opportunity we have to be the hands and feet of Jesus!
- Encourage the downtrodden. Offer a kind word or a listening ear to someone who feels overlooked.
- Have compassion for the grieving. Share their burden and remind them they’re not alone.
- Act with grace. Respond to anger with patience, to criticism with love, and to division with unity.
The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—are the evidence of a life surrendered to Christ. Let these guide your actions and interactions.
Choose Wisely
You have a choice: to follow the example of those who do not know God’s Word or to live by the commands of the Most High. Choose wisely. Choose grace. Choose to metaphorically wash the feet of others, even when it’s uncomfortable, undeserved, or inconvenient.
In doing so, you reflect the heart of Jesus and offer a glimpse of His love to a hurting world.
