Wrestling with Questions About Faith and God’s Goodness

Have you ever found yourself grappling with questions about the goodness of God? Wondering if God is so good then why is there so much sickness, suffering, or injustice in the world? If you have, you’re not alone.

I’ve been there—sitting in tears, wrestling with these very questions, trying to reconcile what I believe with what I see around me. Life doesn’t always feel fair, and that can shake us to our core.

But here’s something I’ve learned through my fifty years of walking through the good times and the hard ones: God’s goodness isn’t dependent on my comfort level. That truth has been a game-changer for me.

It’s not easy to wrap our minds around the fact that His goodness is so much bigger than what feels good or fair in our limited, human perspective. Sometimes, what feels like the worst thing at the moment is just one thread in the larger tapestry He’s weaving.

The Bible reminds us of this in Isaiah 55:8-9:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Faith doesn’t mean we won’t have questions. It doesn’t mean we won’t experience pain or suffering, because those are inevitable in a fallen world.

So, what does faith actually do?

I love the way Elisabeth Elliot puts it: Faith helps us know where to take our questions. That’s been a lifeline for me.

When life doesn’t make sense, I take my questions to the Word of God. Scriptures like Psalm 34:18 remind me that I’m not alone in my pain:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

When the weight feels unbearable, I pour out my heart to the Lord in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages me:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

And when I feel like screaming, “It’s not fair!” I take my questions to the foot of the cross—the very place where fairness died, but mercy and grace were won for us all.

When I need strength, I turn to Isaiah 40:31:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

You also need a community of strong, faith-filled people who can help you wrestle through your emotions and find firm footing in God’s truth. Ultimately, I take my questions to my Heavenly Father—the One who gives peace that surpasses all understanding, even when the questions remain unanswered.

If you’re struggling with questions today, I want you to hear this: It’s okay to ask them. Faith doesn’t mean we stop wondering why. It just means we know where to bring our wonderings.

Psalm 62:8 is a beautiful reminder of where to go:
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

You don’t have to carry those doubts and fears alone. Take them to God. Bring them to His Word. Surround yourself with people who will remind you of His truth when it feels hard to believe it. And trust that even in the wrestling, He is working all things together for good, just as Romans 8:28 promises:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Because, friend, His goodness is bigger than your pain, your doubts, or your circumstances. And He’s big enough to hold your questions.
