It’s a question that cuts through the noise of life: “What do I really want?” Elisabeth Elliot frames it with profound clarity: “Did I want what I wanted, or did I want what He wanted, no matter what it might cost?”
This isn’t a question we answer just once—it’s one we revisit in different seasons of our lives, often when we realize we’ve been chasing something that leaves us drained, unsatisfied, or empty. I know this because I’ve been there.
For five years, I poured my energy into a reselling business. At first, it felt like a practical, worthwhile pursuit—a way to contribute financially while working from home. But over time, the work left me emotionally and physically exhausted. I felt disconnected, not only from God but also from my purpose. Deep down, I knew He was calling me to write and create, to share His truths and encourage others. Yet I resisted, choosing what felt comfortable and familiar over what He wanted.
Why do we do this? Why do we so often choose our way instead of His?
The Illusion of Control
We often convince ourselves that our plans are better because they seem safer, more predictable, or more aligned with our understanding of success. But Scripture reminds us:
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).
My reselling business wasn’t inherently wrong, but it became a distraction—a way for me to avoid surrendering fully to God’s call. I wanted what I wanted, and I was afraid of the cost of saying “yes” to Him.
The Cost of Obedience
Elliot’s words force us to confront the cost of obedience: “Did I want what He wanted, no matter what it might cost?”
Jesus Himself spoke of this cost in Luke 9:23-24:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”
Saying “yes” to God often requires letting go of what feels safe or logical. For me, it meant setting aside a business I had built with my own hands to step into something uncertain but deeply aligned with His calling.
God’s Promises Fulfilled
What I’ve learned—and what I’m still learning—is that God’s plans are always better than mine. He promises to equip us for what He calls us to do. As Philippians 1:6 assures us:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
When I finally surrendered and began writing, I found joy and fulfillment I never experienced in my business. It wasn’t easy—obedience rarely is—but it was worth it.
Reflection: What Do You Really Want?
So, I ask you: What do you really want? Are you chasing after your desires, or are you seeking His will, no matter the cost?
Here are some questions to consider:
- Am I Pursuing My Desires or His? Take time to pray and ask God to reveal whether your current pursuits align with His will.
- What’s Holding Me Back? Is it fear, comfort, or a desire for control? Naming the obstacle is the first step toward surrender.
- How Can I Take a Step of Faith? Obedience often starts with one small “yes.” What is God asking of you today?
Encouragement for the Journey
If you’ve been resisting God’s call—whether out of fear, busyness, or doubt—you’re not alone. But know this: His plans are for your good, even when they feel uncertain. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
It’s never too late to align your desires with His promises. As I’ve learned, stepping into God’s will isn’t about perfection—it’s about surrender. And in that surrender, you’ll find the peace and purpose you’ve been longing for.
What about you? Are you chasing your own plans, or are you ready to say “yes” to His? Let’s continue this conversation in the comments—I’d love to hear your story.
