I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared: The Jessie Spano Moment Every Woman Has Had

,

I was a junior in high school when Jessie Spano unraveled on Saved by the Bell.

The scene is etched into our collective Gen X memory: Jessie, panicked, overwhelmed, pushing herself to the edge and then breaking down in Zack’s arms.
“I’m so excited… I’m so scared.”

It was raw. Overacted, maybe, but real.
And for me, it hit differently.

Because just a month earlier, I had been held at gunpoint during a robbery.
One minute, I was a teenager with typical worries-bullies, crushes, and fashion (or lack thereof).
Next, I was staring down the barrel of a weapon, unsure if I would see the next day.

So when Jessie spiraled under the weight of it all, I didn’t laugh.
I knew what it was like to appear as though you had it together, while internally unraveling.

The Illusion of “Fine”

Back then, I didn’t have the language for trauma. Or nervous system dysregulation. Or survival mode. I just knew that something had shifted. I didn’t feel safe anymore as my bedroom had been personally violated.

But I smiled. I kept going.
I drank Mountain Dew, read my Sweet Valley High Books, and pretended everything was “fine.”
Just like Jessie.

And looking back now, I realize how early we were all taught to perform stability. To stay productive. To aim for perfection even when we were cracking inside.

From the 90s to Now: We’re Still Pushing Through

I’ve had a lot of life since then, beautiful and brutal.

A car accident in 2016 that shattered my short-term memory.
Chronic illness that reshaped my days.
Seizures remind me that my brain has its own rhythm now.
Motherhood. Marriage. Grief. Growth.

And still, I have days where I wake up and feel like I can conquer the world
“I’m so excited!”

Until I forget what I was doing.
Or my body gives out.
Or I get overwhelmed by everything and nothing, at the same time.
“I’m so… scared.”

The Jessie Moment Is Universal Now

Jessie’s crash wasn’t really about caffeine pills.
It was about expectations. Pressure. Burnout.
It was about not having the space or the support to rest.

And I think we’re finally starting to realize: That moment? It wasn’t just a dramatic scene. It was a warning.

We can’t keep running on empty and calling it ambition.
We can’t keep measuring our worth by how much we do.

What I Wish I Knew Then

I wish I could go back and talk to that 16-year-old girl who went to school that Monday, still shaking from trauma, still showing up like everything was okay.

I’d tell her:

  • It’s okay not to be okay.
  • You don’t have to be the strong one all the time.
  • You can rest. You deserve to rest.

I’d remind her that burnout isn’t a personality trait.
That her worth isn’t tied to her productivity.
And that surviving trauma doesn’t mean you have to keep performing perfectly.

If You’re in Your Jessie Era…

You’re not alone.

Whether you’re battling health challenges, navigating grief, working through trauma, or simply trying to make it through another overstimulating day, you don’t have to hustle your way to healing.

Take the nap. Cancel the plans. Let the to-do list wait.

Let your nervous system breathe.
Let your body be still.
Let yourself be held, not just by others, but by grace.

Our Story Deserves a Softer Ending

Jessie’s breakdown wasn’t the end of her story.
And neither is yours.

Maybe you don’t wake up “so excited” every day anymore.
Maybe you wake up groggy, overwhelmed, and working through healing.
But you’re still here. Still showing up. Still growing.

And that, my friend, is a strength far greater than any gold star.

Let’s rewrite the script.

No more glamorizing the breakdown.

Let’s glorify the comeback.
